Think in categories, not forbidden foods
- Sugar-sweetened beverages and juice can deliver carbohydrate with little chewing or fiber.
- Candy, pastries and many desserts combine added sugar with refined flour and are easy to eat in large portions.
- White bread, many refined cereals and other low-fiber grains can be digested quickly.
- Large portions of any carbohydrate-rich food can create a bigger glucose load, even when the food is nutritious.
Whole fruit is not the same as fruit juice
Whole fruit contains intact structure and fiber. Juice removes much of that structure and is consumed quickly. CDC specifically notes that fruit juice can raise blood sugar faster than whole fruit.
The same food can behave differently in a meal
Protein, fat and fiber slow digestion and can change the speed of the glucose rise. That makes a bowl of refined cereal eaten alone different from a mixed meal that contains protein and fiber, even if both contain carbohydrate.
If you monitor glucose, the goal is to learn repeatable patterns and build workable meals—not to classify every food as “good” or “bad.”
